You are not your business!
In times of difficulty, people often find this the hardest thing to hear.
You’ve spent so much time building up this entity – the company, the business, the brand, the reputation. Now it’s under threat.
One of the biggest threats to the individual is the emotional connection they have with their business. In fact, it has been, and always will be, the biggest barrier to business success.
Getting into business is like getting into gambling. The successful ones are those who can stay icy cold and make decisions based on logic and evidence, not on emotion. The best gamblers are those that are able to cut their losses and walk away.
You may have to make some tough choices and if you see your business as an extension of you, those choices become tougher. Downsizing is hard enough, but when it feels like you’re amputating an arm, then it becomes really tough.
However, it is all made up.
A company is just a number at companies house.
A business, a brand, a logo – these are just ideas and thoughts that we have applied meaning to.

In a recent webinar called “How to Survive the Financial Crisis”, the natural inclination is to think that the subject matter is about Business Survival, but that is not a guarantee. In fact, ‘Surviving’ should be talking about ‘you’. If you can save the business as well, great, but ‘you’ take top priority.
You see, what you’ve done before, you can do again – if you need to.
The real brand, the real reputation, the real value – lies in you. Everything else is just a vehicle that you happen to be travelling in right now.
If, however, you need to pull over, get out and take a different vehicle for a while then, as long as you’re still moving, you’re doing what you need to do.
Once you can truly disassociate yourself from your business, then you can make the right decisions that you need to make to ensure that ‘you’ survive.
Finding the perspective and ‘distance’ to truly understand that you are not your business is tough – find expert support and professional coaching to help you on your journey, no matter how hard it seems.
