Whether we’re in lockdown or battling against an economy that is fighting us every inch of the way, it can be exhausting.

Mentally and emotionally as much as anything else.

Make sure you are looking after yourself both physically and mentally. If you break down, you’re no use to anyone.

It is very easy to just sit around at home living on a diet of ready meals and pizza. When we’re stressed, the fight or flight instinct kicks in. That means that your body thinks that you’re going to be expending a huge amount of energy very soon and consequently it demands fuel. Hence the desire to carb up in large volumes.

The truth is that you’re actually going to expend less energy than normal, so the results are not going to be pretty.

We, therefore, have to be really careful with our diet whilst we’re on lockdown. Healthy food, smaller portions. Time to really discipline yourself.

And take proper breaks. Go for the walks we’re allowed to take. Jump around at home – whatever to keep yourself moving and the blood flowing.

At the same time, keep a track on your emotional state and make sure you have access to people you can talk to. Today’s technology allows you to speak to pretty much anyone anywhere, so the only barrier to you having a conversation lies in you not asking for one.

One key area that often gets overlooked in these situations is around the concept of identity.

If we have been identifying ourselves by what we do, then this can become a very confusing time. Having to change our routine, change our strategy, maybe even change the business itself – can lead to an existential crisis if we’re not careful.

This may require a period of introspection.

Who are you?

Not ‘What do you do?’ or ‘What are you known as?’ but ‘Who are you really?’

We often speak about focussing on a direction, but it’s just as important to start from a stable base, and that starts with you.

When you get clear about who you are and what’s really important to you, then you can deal with pretty much anything that the world throws at you.

Finding the perspective and ‘distance’ to protect yourself from difficult times can be hard – seek out expert support and coaching to help you on your journey.
