Life is a rollercoaster
When I hear people talk about their life in business and about it having ups and downs – they often say, “Business life is a rollercoaster”.
More often than not, they have used completely the wrong metaphor for what they are actually trying to say.
What they are saying is that ‘up’s are good and ‘down’s are bad and that’s it.
But if you like rollercoasters, that’s not how it works.
The ‘down’ bits are what it’s all about.
‘Up’s are great, of course, but they are really only just exciting anticipations of what’s to come. The real rush – which is the point when things go swooping down.
Ask any fun fair enthusiast and they will tell you that a rollercoaster is only boring when you stop.
This is the true meaning of the metaphor. Find a way to enjoy the ‘down’s as much, if not more than, the ‘up’s.

The truth is that there is no such thing as a stressful situation. Only a situation that we find stressful.
“Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Viktor Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning (see our book review here)
If the news makes you depressed, stop listening to the news!
When all you hear is negatives, the brain does what the brain does. It takes the information filtering through and extrapolates it out so that it thinks that everything is negative.
Instead, start surrounding yourself with positive people.
The British are one of the best at finding humour in the darkest of things and it genuinely has a beneficial effect on their psyche. So don’t get upset by a bad taste joke, but get involved and make a better one.
In my insolvency days, there was a large manufacturer that we traded for about 6 months. One of the employees pulled together a CD mix of songs to reflect the company going bust.
Track listings included “The Road to Hell”, “Where Have All the Good Times Gone”, “Another One Bites the Dust” and, of course, “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”.
A brilliant example of lifting spirits.
My own is, “Joy in the face of darkness is the path to light”.
If we are destined to head through some dark times, then this could be the best therapy session ever.
If you’ve ever seen an inspirational speaker, heard an amazing story of heroism or read the thousand of clichés that get bandied around – it’s all about defiance against adversity. You know the type: “We’re like teabags, we don’t know how strong we are until placed in hot water.” or “Be the change you want to see in the world”
All the things that get written on tea towels and mugs. Those posts you shared on Facebook because they seemed cool.
Well, now is the time to take them to heart. Now is the time for you to be the hero.
Find a way to enjoy it.
Finding the perspective and ‘distance’ to appreciate (and even enjoy) the downtimes can be hard – seek out expert support and coaching to help you on your journey.
