How to make LinkedIn work – even when you’re not sure people are engaging

Yes! It’s not a surprise to learn that many of your prospects are not actively engaged on LinkedIn. Let’s explain why this shouldn’t discourage you.

Accepting ‘how your connections’ might be using LinkedIn

It is commonly known that engagement and interaction take place amongst a very small percentage of the LinkedIn population at large. In fact, it might even be as little as 1% or 2% of people take the trouble to actively comment on other people’s posts and possibly fewer still who actively write and post content.

However, LinkedIn is made up of a great number of people who I call ‘lurkers’.

These people are often spending time on LinkedIn reading and being influenced by those of us who do post and comment.

On this basis, you can be assured that your quality content will be finding its way to the ‘digital doorstep’ of many people who are in that lurking category. They are experiencing value from the content you share, the perspectives you bring to your world, and you are building trust in your personal brand, even if it does not feel like it.

I have on many occasions had people reach out to me to do business who tell me they have been enjoying my content for many years. Some of them are not even connections. This gives me the confidence to believe that despite the feeling that we ‘sometimes exist in our own echo chamber’, we are in fact influencing an audience around us over a longer period of time.

In summary, don’t be discouraged by the lack of people who seem ‘not’ to engage on LinkedIn. You will be influencing them, and the results will show themselves over time.
