Leaders and managers who are trying to grow a business, full of insightful thoughts and useful tools.

First off; don’t buy this on a kindle or on audio, the templates, which are actually an important part of the learning, are too small and you can’t read the text. i-pad is better, a printed copy is best. As you’ll want to refer back, a physical book makes that more likely.

Secondly; don’t try and read this book all at once, it is probably best kept on a desk and dipped into periodically.

It is worth treating this book more as a strategy course than a book to read. There are four main elements of the book each of which is complemented by a host of free resources on the scaling up website and are all covered in depth. It is almost better to start the endeavour of reading this book by treating it as four books and reviewing your own thoughts at the end of each section.

The book encourages the reader to concentrate on four key aspects of business, Strategy, People, Cash and Execution.

The biggest benefit is the highly practical tools that support the four priorities including how to complete the One Page Strategic Plan. There are excellent case studies throughout that provoke thought and try to bridge the gap between the theory and real-life organisations.

The full title of this book is Scaling Up: How a Few Companies Make It…and Why the Rest Don’t. It is the last part that is most illuminating, the contrast between success and failure creates the dawning realisation that the author is onto something.

If you have read the Jim Collins set of books, Good to Great etc. and you endorse the content, this book can be regarded as the detail behind the concepts. As always detail is a great deal more difficult to explain and assimilate than concepts, the author does a difficult job well.

Could a Yorkshire perspective improve this book?

The book is so dry it is a very difficult read requiring concentration, a bit more humour would go a long way.
